Players of Pokemon Legends: Z-A can now grab special Alpha versions of Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile thanks to a new limited-time distribution event from The Pokémon Company. Released last year on both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, Z-A continues the story of the Kalos region, taking place in Lumiose City and expanding on the narrative threads left behind in Pokemon X and Y, while also revisiting several familiar side characters.
Alongside this event, a fresh update for Pokémon Home has gone live. This update enables players to transfer Pokémon from previous titles into Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and also prepares for the upcoming launch of Pokemon Champions on April 8. The new free-to-start title will focus on global turn-based battles, allowing trainers to use Pokémon they’ve raised in Z-A.
How to Get Alpha Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile
To claim these special starters, follow these steps:
- Update both Pokemon Home and Pokemon Legends: Z-A to the latest versions
- Save your progress in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
- Open Pokemon Home on Switch or Switch 2 and transfer at least one Pokémon from Z-A
- Exit and launch Pokemon Home on a mobile device
- Accept the Mystery Gifts when prompted
Once you open Pokémon Home on mobile, you’ll be greeted by the app’s mascot, Poké Boy, who will guide you to the Mystery Gift section. There, you can claim the three Alpha starters and even give them nicknames before adding them to your collection.
Each of these Pokémon arrives at level 5 and comes with a unique move typically only obtainable via Technical Machines: Chikorita knows Dazzling Gleam, Tepig has Wild Charge, and Totodile comes with Dragon Claw. After claiming them, you can transfer the starters back into Pokemon Legends: Z-A—though they cannot be sent to other Pokémon games.
While that limitation may disappoint some players, it aligns with Z-A’s focus on its own ecosystem, especially with the introduction of new Mega Evolutions for Meganium, Emboar, and Feraligatr.
More Mystery Gift Rewards Available
This isn’t the only bonus available through Pokémon Home. Players can still obtain the original-colored Magearna via Mystery Gift, provided they have registered the first 890 Pokémon in the National Pokédex within Pokémon Home. With the latest update, this special Magearna can now be transferred into Pokemon Legends: Z-A, where it is capable of Mega Evolving.
Interestingly, while Magearna’s standard form is already present in the game, its original-color variant unlocks a unique Pokédex entry upon Mega Evolution. For completionists, this could be the perfect motivation to finally finish the National Dex.
